The way we behave is mostly shaped by our surroundings, by the law of averages, we tend to become the average of those we spend time with. Unless we mindfully start questioning these patterns, we rarely break out of them.

Here, I explore these conventional vices with the aim to understand them better, most of which lie at the root of our sufferings.

The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, is a grouping and classification of vices within Christian teachings. Some of you might remember them from the pop culture references (DC's Shazam, Netflix Anime etc.).

Let's explore each of them:

What’s inside

Vices

7 chapters

Understanding the vices helps in dealing with them

  1. 01

    Pride

Pride as self-respect is a virtue, but when it becomes excessive self-elevation, it turns sinful. Humility is the antidote.

  2. 02

    Greed

Greed is an uncontrolled desire for more, and why charity and generosity are its antidote.

  3. 03

    Lust

Lust is an intense craving beyond need, and how it differs from passion.

  4. 04

    Envy

Envy is pain at another's good fortune, what fuels it, how it differs from admiration, and why gratitude is its only real antidote.

  5. 05

    Gluttony

Gluttony is the inability to say no, and why temperance restores the ability to truly enjoy.

  6. 06

    Anger

Anger is a signal, not an enemy. Understand its phases, root causes, and how to work with it without suppressing it or acting on it.

  7. 07

    Sloth

Sloth is spiritual apathy and inaction, and why doing things anyway is the cure.

Virtues

7 chapters

Each vice has a corresponding virtue — its antidote and its opposite

  1. 08

    Humility

Humility is not thinking less of yourself — it's thinking of yourself less. The virtue of accurate self-knowledge and openness.

  2. 09

    Charity

Charity is unconditional giving — not a transaction, but an orientation toward others over self.

  3. 10

    Chastity

Chastity is not abstinence — it is the mastery of desire: the freedom to want without being ruled by wanting.

  4. 11

    Gratitude

Gratitude is a deliberate reorientation toward what is present — not a feeling that arrives, but a practice that is built.

  5. 12

    Temperance

Temperance is not joylessness — it is the moderation that preserves the very capacity to enjoy.

  6. 13

    Patience

Patience is not passive waiting — it is active endurance: holding steady without being consumed.

  7. 14

    Diligence

Diligence is purposeful consistency — showing up for the right work, regardless of whether motivation is present.
